Sage Thrasher

I am linking up with Wild Bird Wednesday and Nature Notes

Today's post is featuring the Sage Thrasher.  Even though I shared this thrasher on my post below I wanted to share more information on this bird. We found this Sage Thrasher along the Manzanita trail at the Guadalupe Mtns National Park.

The Sage Thrasher is a medium sized bird similar to the Mockingbird and Catbird. They are grey-brown on the upperparts and white with dark streaks on the underparts. They have a slim straight bill, yellow eyes and a long tail.

They mainly eat insects in the summer and berries, especially berries in the winter.

They breed in western North America from southern Canada to Arizona and New Mexico.

The Sage Thrasher was one of  my vacation lifers. Thanks for visiting and for the nice comments.

  3. Lovely shots Eileen!
As always thank you for your info about the bird. I think the greens in this image really set off the coloring and markings of the Thrasher. He sure picked a fine place to pose. :)

  32. Beautiful images of the striking Sage Thrasher, Eileen! Congratulations on the life bird! Just last year a Sage Thrasher was seen in Chicago for several days. A rare sight here in the midwest. Though many others saw it, I was not able to locate it. At least I can view your terrific photographs here.

  47. Beautiful shots of the Sage Thrasher Eileen! One of the most impressive things I enjoyed when I found this bird a couple of years ago is its song. This is a link to its beautiful complex song.

It's unfortunate that the Sage Thrasher is declining due to loss of habitat, especially in British Columbia.

  48. Sorry I didn't read the bit about links Eileen. Feel free to publish my comment without the link but check out this bird's incredible song.
