American Redstart

My post for the Friday Ark and Camera Critters I am showing the American Redstart. The male was seen last weekend during my bird count at the clear cut study area located at the reservoir's watershed.

I have been enjoying the warblers showing up at the reservoir and watershed near my house. The American Redstart breeds in moist and mixed deciduous woods. The male Redstart has halloween colors, mostly black and orange at its sides. I have heard the female being called the Yellowstart because she has yellow at her sides.

Below the female hiding in the bush, but if you look close you can see the yellow at her sides.

Another male perched in the bush, you can see his pretty orange side.

Another angle looking up at the male Redstarts bottom, white underneath, black head and back and bright orange at its sides.

Another female below, still far away but a little clearer photo.

For me trying to photograph any type of  warbler is very hard, these little birds are so quick and bounce around on the tree limbs way too fast for me. Just when I want to snap a photo, they take off and bounce to another branch. I am happy to get any photo to record where and when I see these beautiful birds.

To see more wonderful critters, you should board the Friday Ark  and
for more cute animals check out Camera Critters.  Thanks to the host of the Friday Ark and to Misty Dawn for hosting Camera Critters.

I hope you enjoyed my American Redstarts and thanks for stopping by. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

  4. I love to see and learn the American birds. You know so many. The shapes, colours of each one, which is why I come here. You are a grand teacher.

  5. Love the coloration of the male....of course. Fabulous photos Eileen!

Hope you found my hummingbird post. They're so fascinating. I have several photos of Baltimore Orioles [or is it oreos? LOL] that frequent the same feeders. I'll try and get them posted next week sometime.

    Have a glorious weekend.

  9. I'm with you Eileen - when it comes to birds I keep clicking as they bounce around hoping to capture the moment.
I think you did well with all those branches and leaves surrounding them as well to get the focus on the birds.
    Have a great weekend!

  10. Hi Eileen and the American Redstart is one of my favourite US birds. As you say you chose a really active little fella and lady to try and photograph. Again as you say, all warblers are tricky to keep up with. The main thing is that you saw it well and really enjoyed the company of both the male and the female.

  12. Nicely done. I have the same problem with the little birds. Cardinals are really difficult too. I've seen gorgeous shots of them but around here they never seem to be still for more than a second.

  13. Your colorful birds are very beautiful.
For me any bird is too quick to be photographed. I don't know how do you manage to take so many beautiful shots of them.

  28. Good job capturing these little speedsters--I have trouble even getting my binos on them, let along a camera lens.

  29. That is a perfect Halloween bird - your first photo especially captured him perfectly. I've tried to capture some of the small, quick birds where I live and I've never had any luck.

  31. Oh I heartily agree! They just flit, flit, flit. I finally got a half-way decent shot of a Virginia's and a Wilson's this weekend and I am pleased as punch! Your photos are great-I love that second one with that sweet female!

  32. Beautiful birds! The only time I've seen a redstart was in Texas when we spent the winter at Port Aransas -- so many birds there in the Spring. I wish I'd had a good camera. Your pictures are the next best thing though (actually I'm sure they're better pictures than my own would have been.)
